    DESCRIPTION

    Myelodysplastic syndrome is a group of cancers in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow do not mature or become healthy blood cells. In a healthy person, the bone marrow makes blood stem cells that become mature blood cells over time.

    Symptoms –

    Fatigue

    Shortness of breath

    Anemia

    Thrombocytopenia

    Petechiae

    Leukopenia

    Risk factors –

    Older age

    Previous treatment with chemotherapy or radiation

    Exposure to certain chemicals

    Diagnosis and treatment –

    Blood test

    Removing bone marrow for testing

    Treatment –

    Blood transfusions

    Medications

    Bone marrow transplant
