DESCRIPTION

Spinal muscular atrophy is a genetic disorder characterized by weakness and wasting in muscles used for movement. it is caused by a loss of specialized nerve cells, called motor neurons that control muscle movement.

Symptoms –

Floppy or weak arms and legs

Movement problems

Twitching or shaking muscles

Bone and joint problems

Swallowing problems

Breathing difficulties

Risk factors –

Sedentary lifestyle

Exposure to infectious disease

Unhealthy diet

Diagnosis and test –

Electromyography

Muscle biopsy

Chorionic villus sampling

Amniocentesis

Treatment –

There is no cure for spinal muscular atrophy. Treatment consists of managing the symptoms and preventing complications.
