DESCRIPTION

Rickets is a condition that affect bone development in children. It causes bone pain, poor growth and soft, weak bones that can lead to bone deformities. Adults can experience a similar condition, which is known as osteomalacia or soft bones.

Symptoms –

Delayed growth

Delayed motor skills

Pain in the spine, pelvis and legs

Muscle weakness

Bowed legs or knock knees

Thickened wrist and ankles

Breastbone projection

Risk factors –

Dark skin

Mother’s vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy

Northern latitudes

Premature birth

Medications

Exclusive breast feeding

Diagnosis and test –

Softer skull

Bowlegged

Abnormalities in ribcage

Wrists and ankles are thicker and larger

Treatment –

Calcium and vitamin D supplements
