DESCRIPTION – an osmolality test measures the concentration of particles in a solution. In this case, the solution is urine. An osmolality urine test is performed to measure the concentration of particles in urine. Greater than normal results may indicate conditions such as Addison disease, congestive heart failure or shock.

COLLECT – urine
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – transfer 1 ml aliquot from a well-mixed urine to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – frozen
STABILITY – ambient: 24 hours; refrigerated: 1 week; frozen: 6 months
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – urine collected with preservatives
