A sample of your sputum will be required by your health care provider. During the examination:

• A doctor will ask you to take a few deep breaths and then cough into a special cup.
• To help loosen sputum from your lungs, your provider may tap you on the chest.
• If you're having trouble coughing up enough sputum, your doctor may recommend inhaling a salty mist to help you cough deeper.
• If you're still having trouble coughing up enough sputum, your doctor may recommend a bronchoscopy. You'll be given a sedative to help you relax, followed by a numbing agent to ensure you don't feel any pain during the procedure.
• Then a thin, lighted tube will be inserted into your airways through your mouth or nose.
• Using a small brush or suction, your provider will collect a sample from your airway.

Before the sample is taken, you may need to rinse your mouth with water. If you are having a bronchoscopy, you may be asked to fast for one to two hours prior to the procedure.
