DESCRIPTION – this test helps your healthcare provider figure out if you’re having a heart attack. Measuring CK-MB used to be common tool for diagnosing heart attacks, but healthcare providers use it less often today. Cardiac troponin is now the test of choice for finding a heart attack
METHODOLOGY – chemiluminiscent immunoassay
TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
COLLECT – serum separator tube or green (sodium heparin)
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – allow specimen to clot for 15-20 minutes at room temperature. Separate the serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 2 ml serum or plasma to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – frozen
STABILITY – ambient: 12 hours; refrigerated: 72 hours; frozen: 3 months
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – grossly hemolyzed specimens
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
