TRANSFERRIN TEST
DESCRIPTION – Transferrin test directly measures the level of transferrin in the blood. The level depends upon liver function and a person’s nutritional status. Transferrin is a protein that may decrease during any inflammatory process and is referred to as a negative acute phase reactant.
METHODOLOGY – quantitative immunoturbidimetry
TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
PATIENT PREPARATION – fasting specimen preferred
COLLECT – serum separator tube or plasma separator tube or green (sodium heparin)
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate the serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 ml serum or plasma to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 8 days; refrigerated: 8 days; frozen: 6 months
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – specimens collected in EDTA. Hemolyzed specimens
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
