POST PRANDIAL BLOOD SUGAR TEST
DESCRIPTION – A post prandial glucose test is a blood glucose test that determines the amount of glucose, in the plasma after a meal. The diagnosis is typically restricted to postprandial hyperglycemia due to lack of strong evidence of co-relation with a diagnosis of diabetes.
METHODOLOGY – quantitative enzymatic
TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
PATIENT PREPARATION – patient should fast for at least 8 hours prior to collection of fasting specimen
COLLECT – collect 2 timed specimens. Grey (sodium fluoride).
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 ml of plasma to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 24 hours; refrigerated: week; frozen: 1 year
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
