MICROFILARIA DETECTION TEST

DESCRIPTION – the standard method for diagnosing active infection is the identification of microfilariae in a blood smear by microscopic examination. The microfilariae that cause lymphatic filariasis circulate in the blood at night.

METHODOLOGY – semi-quantitative enzyme linked immunosorbent assay

TURN AROUND TIME – 3-17 days

SPECIMEN REQUIERED –

COLLECT – plain red or serum separator tube

SPECIMEN PREPARATION – transfer 0.2 ml serum to transport tube

STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated or room temperature

STABILITY – ambient: 1 week; refrigerated: 2 weeks; frozen: 1 month

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
