CHOLINESTERASE TEST
DESCRIPTION – serum cholinesterase is a blood test that looks at levels of 2 substances that help the nervous system work properly. They are called acetylcholinesterase and pseudo-cholinesterase. Your nerves need these substances to send signals. Acetylcholinesterase is found in nerve tissue and red blood cells.
METHODOLOGY – quantitative enzymatic
TURN AROUND TIME – between 1 to 4 days
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
COLLECT – lavender (EDTA), pink (potassium EDTA)
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – do not freeze. Transfer 3 ml whole blood
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 4 hours; refrigerated: 1 week
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – green (sodium heparin), frozen specimens and clotted or hemolyzed specimens
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
