DESCRIPTION – HER2 stands for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2. HER2 gene is present on each breast cell. Due to the HER2 gene mutation, there is a production of too much HER2 protein causing the development of tumor in breast.

Used for the detection of breast cancer

Sometimes used for checking weather cancer is responding to the treatment

METHODOLOGY – fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)

TURN AROUND TIME – 5 days

PATIENT PREPARATION –

COLLECT – tumor tissue

SPECIMEN PREPARATION – formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue block. Leave it for 6-72 hours. Protect it from excessive heat

STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – room temperature (18-25 degrees C)

UNACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS – alternate fixatives and decalcified specimens. Fixative duration should not exceed the fixed time
